Empire Snake Building

References:

Describe:
For this project, I used graphite on paper to create my project. I based my building on the Empire State Building, distorting it to make it look like a snake. I used two point perspective to make the base, then used guidelines to make the windows and outlines of the building even-spaced and on a set path. This helps keep the building looking proportional and even. Obviously, the building has been simplified a lot, but that was mainly done to save time.

Analyze:
For this project I used lots of movement with the lines, to make the building look like it was wriggling like a snake. It also uses lots of repetition with the windows, and contrast between the foreground and background.

Interpretation:
This piece doesn't really have a deep meaning, but it was very interesting to create. The concept of creating a building into a snake almost seems like something out of a surrealest painting, maybe a like Salvador Dali  creation. This was  my goal with the project, to make it look surreal, but still very recognizable as the Empire State Building. The main reason for choosing this building was because it was very long and tall, and it is also a famous landmark.

Judgement:
I like how this piece came out, however there are some things I would do differently if I were to do it again. I don't really like that there is no shading, and I would probably change that if i did it again. Most of the windows look uneven, and they change shape throughout the building. If I did this again, I would try to be more careful about this. I am however, very proud of the shape of the building, how it looks even, and you can clearly tell it's supposed to represent a snake.

Airport project

Describe
This is the piece I did for the Airport Project. I wanted to capture a feeling of protectiveness and motherly love to fit the theme of the project. In the piece, you see a mother phoenix, appearing angry as if it is fighting off a larger creature to protect it's chick. In the background, I used cool colors to contrast with the light colors in the foreground. I also erased the background near the flames, to give off the illusion that the phoenix is lighting up the background.

Analyze
In this piece I tried to use emphasis to draw attention to the flame and the bird. I did this but contrasting the dark background with the light colors of the bird. It also uses a sense of movement, with the rippling flames and the bird looking like it is about to attack something.

Interpretation
Like I said before, this piece is supposed to invoke a feeling of love and protectiveness from parents. I was hoping to accomplish this with the image of a phoenix, a bird that is often thought to be immortal, looking helpless and scared, as it's mother tries to defend it. I feel like this is something a lot of parents can relate to with young children, and that is why I believe my piece was successful.

Judgement
I am very proud of this piece. The way the fire turned out was way better than I expected and the shading on the bird was very successful in my project. This is one of the more impressive colored pencil drawings I've made, and that is why I'm proud of it. The only thing I would personally change about it is the shading on the background. I was really pressed for time at the end and I do not personally like how the background looks. I defiantly am very proud of it and am glad to see it turn out this well.

Dilophosaurus

References:

Description:

This piece is of a dilophosaurus, from a frontal view. It is made with graphite and paper, using stippling as the main form of shading. This was mainly to give off a sense of scales or reptilian skin. This piece was not very difficult to make, but because of the stippling, it took a very long time to make. The background is colored gray to make the dinosaur really stand out and give you a better sense of where the outlines are.

Analyze:

I chose to put the subject of this piece in the middle of the page so that it was giving off the illusion that the viewer is staring right at it. I used lines and shading to really emphasize the face so it looked intimidating and intense. I mainly used the references to help with the composition of the face, and especially the placement of the hands. They also helped me determine how the frill would look, though if I did it again I would not put the bony spines on it, as they are not realistic or accurate.

Interpretation:

This piece is meant to create the idea that you are standing face to face with this giant, threatening prehistoric animal. The dilophosaurus' frill is flared out, which means that it is angry or excited. It looks like the viewer was just walking through some bushes when they unfortunately met with this dinosaur. This piece is much more objective than most, and while it doesn't have much of a symbolic meaning, it creates its own scenario within itself.

Judgement:

While I am happy how this piece came out and am impressed with the stippling, since it was very time consuming, I am overall not proud with the results. I feel like the anatomy could have been better, the stippling was rushed, and the face turned out extremely uneven. If I could do this piece again, I would take a lot more time to finish all these fine details. I think most of the problems were caused due to rushing, and I would like to fix that next time.
