This is the piece I did for the Airport Project. I wanted to capture a feeling of protectiveness and motherly love to fit the theme of the project. In the piece, you see a mother phoenix, appearing angry as if it is fighting off a larger creature to protect it's chick. In the background, I used cool colors to contrast with the light colors in the foreground. I also erased the background near the flames, to give off the illusion that the phoenix is lighting up the background.
Analyze
In this piece I tried to use emphasis to draw attention to the flame and the bird. I did this but contrasting the dark background with the light colors of the bird. It also uses a sense of movement, with the rippling flames and the bird looking like it is about to attack something.
Interpretation
Like I said before, this piece is supposed to invoke a feeling of love and protectiveness from parents. I was hoping to accomplish this with the image of a phoenix, a bird that is often thought to be immortal, looking helpless and scared, as it's mother tries to defend it. I feel like this is something a lot of parents can relate to with young children, and that is why I believe my piece was successful.
Judgement
I am very proud of this piece. The way the fire turned out was way better than I expected and the shading on the bird was very successful in my project. This is one of the more impressive colored pencil drawings I've made, and that is why I'm proud of it. The only thing I would personally change about it is the shading on the background. I was really pressed for time at the end and I do not personally like how the background looks. I defiantly am very proud of it and am glad to see it turn out this well.
